Commvault Data Backup and
Recovery in AWS S3 Storage

About the Customer:

  • Usha is a leader in Fast Moving Consumer Durables including products like Fans,
Sewing Machines, Home Appliances and Power Products. It is a manufacturing,
sales and marketing organization with a pan India footprint.Founded in 1935,
it is headquartered in Mumbai, with 16 regional locations. The company has
an All India retail presence with 60 company showrooms and logistics supported
    by 33 warehouses.

Customer Challenge:

  1. Usha International is having their Data Centre on-premise. They have around
38 VM (with a mix environment of Windows and Linux platform) instances
running on Vmware virtualization. They have around 350 users (laptop/desktop)
    spread across India.

  2. Customer is taking backup centrally in their Gurgaon DC via Commvault
of all servers and users. They are using NetApp as primary storage.Total Data
size is around 50 TB and daily incremental data is around 50 GB.

  3. They were having only one copy of backup files in their DC and they were
planning to buy a physical tape library solution to have a secondary copy of
    their backup.

  4. This was a very big concern for customers in terms of costing, data security
    and manageability.

  5. Customers were also worried about the data loss in case of any ransomware
    attack on their infrastructure.

Partner Solution

  1. To start with, Best practice in backup and recovery revolves around having a 3-2-1 data backup plan. This dictates that you always maintain three copies of your data: two
stored locally (but on different storage media) and one copy off-site, for a total of three.

  2. Consider a backup copy of critical application data; your primary backup copy is stored in your data center for quick recoveries, with a second copy kept on different
infrastructure (e.g., tape or disk media) to avoid a single point of failure. Then, you periodically upload your data to an off-site cloud; this would be your third
copy. This copy can even be “disconnected” if needed, providing an “air gap” to protect against cyber hacking or ransomware.

  3. S3 Glacier Deep Archive. Commvault is the most comprehensive data protection platform to manage backup, recovery and e-discovery for customer’s backup files.

  4. Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive is an ideal storage class to provide offline protection of your company’s most important data assets, or when long-term data retention
is required for corporate policy, contractual, or regulatory compliance requirements. This is partly because Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive is as much as 75 percent
less expensive than S3 Glacier and provides retrieval within 12 hours using the Standard retrieval speed.

  5. Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive is also designed for the same 99.999999999 percent durability as the S3 Standard and S3 Glacier storage classes and is designed for
    99.9 percent availability.

  6. To get started, simply choose Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage class when configuring your cloud library.

  7. With Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive, with no need for any storage gateway.

Commvault and AWS Joint platform

Point on Security

As the data gets transferred over the network, protecting the integrity of data is an important aspect of any cloud storage implementation. Cloud storage protects the
integrity of the data using the following features:

  • By default, data is transferred through secured channels using HTTPS protocol.

  • From a single platform, Commvault offers comprehensive data management capabilities including data backup, recovery, application migration, e-discovery, disaster recovery,
virtual machine lifecycle management, compliance and legal holds.

  • Combine the Commvault data platform depth and breadth with the AWS large array of storage services and you can rest assured that your data in S3 Glacier Deep Archive
(as well as all other AWS storage classes) is secure and available in the cloud.

  • Commvault supports cloud products by command Center and Console access so we have created IAM User and provided the access permission to s3 (Simple storage service).

  • Amazon S3 (Simple storage service) and S3 Glacier as a secondary storage.

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), is the most fundamental and global Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

  • Moreover, Amazon S3 automatically creates multiple replicas of your data so that your precious data is never lost. It is really easy to have different versions of
data on Amazon S3, which makes data recovery an easy task. With no minimum fee and setup cost, life cycle policies such as moving your less used data to Amazon Glacier
to reduce cost and security policies to stop unauthorized access of the data, Amazon S3 helps you make the most of data without much headache.

  • While cyber threats are increasing, your organization can keep pace and mitigate risk. With highly available cloud storage and greater security protection, it is
simple to start creating secondary and tertiary data copies in the cloud. Without any extra costs, Commvault Complete Backup & Recovery will manage, analyze and secure
your backup data efficiently, while cloud immutability further locks data from all the various cyber threats rampant today, and in the future. With Commvualt you have
the security and protection to store and manage your data on-premises and in the cloud.

Architecture

Results and Benefits

  • We have created a vault by the name of “glacierdatabackup” in their AWS account.

  • We have created on IAM user by the name of “glacierbackup” with IAM policy giving full access to S3 Deep Glacier.

  • This IAM user “glacierbackup” has been configured by AWS CLI at customer server via Respective Access key and secret key.

  • We have done the configuration of S3 Deep Glacier vault in customer’s Commvault Server as storage option. Then we have created new backup policy and new backup
job to store the backup files from their on-premise data repository to S3 Deep Glacier vault of “glacierdatabackup”

  • So that customer can take daily backup of their backup files in AWS S3 as per their availability of bandwidth and their policy.

  • So far customer has taken backup of data around 65 TB in the AWS S3.

  • Cost of Taking the backup of data Size around 50 TB in AWS S3 Glacier is around INR 2.2 lakhs per year.

  • This is opex cost for which customer is playing monthly.

  • Taking the backup to AWS S3 glacier is automated with few clicks to start the backup job.

  • Customer has saved around 70% Cost as compared to the physical tape library and some physical vault storage solution for tapes.

  • Customer is more secure in case of any ransomware attack for any data loss

  • Durability and Scalability: Customers are not worried about upgrading or any physical damage to the tape library. They can store any data size in AWS S3 Glacier.
The Amazon S3 Glacier storage classes run on the world’s largest global cloud infrastructure with virtually unlimited scalability and are designed for 99.999999999
of durability. Data is redundantly stored across multiple Availability Zones that are physically separated within an AWS Region.

  • All-time Availability of Data: Now data is more easily available whenever and wherever it is required for any drill or for any purpose as compared to physical tape
library and vault solution. Since AWS S3 Glacier has 99.99% availability by redundantly storing data across multiple physically separated AWS Availability Zones in a
    given year
